About the Project
Located on the National Institutes of Health (NIH) campus in Hamilton, Montana, the Rocky Mountain Laboratories Comparative Medicine Center – Building B is a two-story, 124,404 SF Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) facility that supports the research missions of NIH and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).
The facility includes a vivarium, insectary, histopathology laboratories, surgical suites, quarantine rooms and administrative offices. Constructed on a secure campus originally established in 1928, Building B replaces a 1963-era structure and integrates modern research capabilities with architectural continuity.
The building features nine dedicated air handling units and electronically controlled dynamic glass that tints with sunlight, enhancing energy efficiency and minimizing visual impact on the surrounding community. Building B strengthens the operational capacity of one of the nation’s premier biomedical campuses, supporting critical infectious disease research while upholding the highest standards of safety, sustainability and scientific integrity.
