About the Project
The new Concourse A/B is the largest project in the history of Baltimore/Washington International (BWI) Airport. It was built to support Southwest Airlines’ growth, BWI’s main airline partner. This expansion is part of the airport’s five-year, $1.8 billion Capital Development Program.
The new terminal covers 650,000 square feet. It includes a large ticketing lobby, advanced baggage handling with in-line screening, a food court, and shopping areas. The project added 15 new passenger boarding bridges. It also included apron paving, new tenant and operations spaces, and updated security checkpoints. Parts of the existing terminal and concourse were improved, too.
Hensel Phelps completed the project without disrupting the airport’s 24/7 operations. To do this, they kept passenger traffic, taxiways, and active aircraft gates functional. The new terminal and concourses connected directly to the existing ones. This meant that services could stay open during construction. This required temporary baggage carousels, partitions and careful planning in active Air Operations Areas (AOA).
The project was completed in two phases. First, the team built the new terminal and one concourse. After moving operations into the new building, they demolished and rebuilt another concourse in phases. This allowed passengers to move between the old and new areas. Hensel Phelps coordinated new TSA checkpoints and kept the current ones running.
The project finished 158 days ahead of schedule, despite a tight 22-month timeline.
