Windsor Wastewater Treatment Facility Headworks Improvements

About the Project

The Town of Windsor Wastewater Treatment Facility Headworks Improvements project expanded and modernized the existing wastewater treatment plant to increase capacity, improve operational efficiency and support the community’s continued growth. The project included construction of a new 7,600-square-foot, two-story headworks facility adjacent to the existing plant, featuring concrete, structural steel and masonry construction. The new facility houses upgraded screening and grit removal systems along, with dedicated electrical and mechanical rooms.

As the first stage of the wastewater treatment process, the headworks facility removes debris, sand, grit and other materials from incoming wastewater before it moves through the remaining treatment stages. The upgraded systems improve the plant’s ability to process wastewater efficiently while reducing wear on downstream equipment. The most complex phase of this project involved retrofitting the new system to connect with the existing headworks building, ensuring the upgraded infrastructure integrated smoothly with the existing wastewater system. Once the new headworks facility became operational, the existing headworks building was converted into an influent pump station. This new pump station significantly increases system capacity, with one new pump having the ability to handle approximately three times the capacity of a single existing pump. In addition, the upgraded system uses coarse screens instead of fine screens, which better align with the new facility design. This project positions the facility for future expansion by increasing treatment capacity from 2.6 million gallons per day (MGD) to 6 MGD, helping to ensure the plant can accommodate long-term development.
