Kremmling Water Treatment Plant Improvements

About the Project

The Kremmling Water Treatment Plant Improvements project replaced the Town of Kremmling’s aging water treatment facility with a new ultrafiltration-based treatment plant and associated infrastructure designed to improve water quality, reliability and long-term operational flexibility. Constructed at the existing treatment plant site west of town, the project included a new treatment building, ultrafiltration treatment systems, chemical feed systems, process piping, controls, electrical systems and a new 500,000-gallon finished water storage tank. The new facility was designed to produce approximately 2.6 million gallons per day (MGD) of treated water for the community.

Startup, commissioning and testing of the new water treatment plant and 500,000-gallon water storage tank presented a unique challenge because seasonal water restrictions and limited water availability in the Kremmling area restricted the use of the Town’s potable water supply for testing activities. To overcome this constraint, the team implemented a temporary closed-loop recirculation system using diesel pumps to transfer water from on-site retention ponds to the storage tank, circulate it through the treatment facility and return it to the tank for reuse. This innovative approach allowed commissioning and performance testing to proceed while conserving local water resources. During commissioning, the team circulated water throughout the facility to verify system performance, identify leaks and confirm that valves, controls and treatment equipment operated and communicated as designed. The team also completed a major functional test that circulated 1,000 gallons per minute through the facility for several hours, validating control sequences, system responsiveness and overall operational performance before initiating chemical treatment operations.
