Design-Build Institute of America Announces Awards for Three Hensel Phelps Projects

The Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) recognized Hensel Phelps with the 2017 Design-Build Project of the Year Award for the University of California, Irvine (UCI) Mesa Court Student Housing Expansion project at DBIA’s Design-Build Conference & Expo on November 9, 2017. In addition, Hensel Phelps received two National Awards of Excellence and three National Awards of Merit.

The award-winning projects are as follows:

UCI Mesa Court Student Housing Expansion (Irvine, CA)

The Mesa Court Expansion project achieved LEED Platinum and consists of three five-story concrete structures, plus a podium. The new residence halls total 884 beds, include ancillary space and an expansive dining facility, and service 2,500 students as a campus landmark and hub for the UCI community.

Mule Creek Infill Complex (Ione, CA)

The Mule Creek Infill Complex houses 1,584 Level II inmates. This California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation project includes 550,000 SF of new construction spread across 24 individual buildings. Hensel Phelps self-performed the exterior concrete and insulated tilt-up walls along with the rest of the concrete package.

 Commercial Crew Transportation Capability (ULA CCtCap)–Launch Complex 41 (Cape Canaveral, FL)

The CCtCap project for United Launch Alliance provided the retrofitting of Launch Complex – 41 to accommodate the new CST-100 Starliner Space Capsule. The project includes a new crew access tower, a crew access arm, and modifications to the platforms inside the existing Vertical Integration Facility building adjacent to the Launch Complex.

Since 1996, DBIA has selected the most outstanding design-build projects throughout the United States that demonstrate the successful application of design-build principles and recognize the use and efficacy of design-build as a project delivery method. Including the awards above, Hensel Phelps has received 47 national DBIA awards.
