Michael (Mike) J. Choutka

Chairman of the Board

Michael (Mike) J. Choutka joined Hensel Phelps in 1991 and is a graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a Bachelor of Science degree in Construction Management Engineering. As Chairman of the Board, Mike is responsible for setting strategic direction, defining mission, and ensuring strong governance. He works closely with the board of directors and the executive management team to establish and implement long-range strategies and goals.

Mike began his career with Hensel Phelps as a Field Engineer, rising through the ranks to Office Engineer, Project Engineer, Project Manager, Operations Manager, Vice President, Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer, President and Chief Executive Officer before serving as Chairman of the Board.

Mike has been active in industry associations for more than 30 years and serves on several industry boards of directors. He supports growing the construction industry through mentorship and serves as the Vice Chair of the Board of Directors for the ACE Mentor Program of America, as well as co-chair of the Transformative Partners Program.

Mike is an industry leader in improving safety and the craft experience and serves on the Executive Committee of Construction Safety Week after being Chair in 2025. He is a board member of the Construction Industry Round Table and is a member of the National Academy of Construction.

He is also a founding board member of AEC Unites, which aims to unify individuals and provide opportunities for all firms throughout the AEC industry. He currently serves as a trustee for the Free Enterprise Alliance of the Associated Builders and Contractors and served as FEA Chair in 2017-2018 and Central Florida Chapter Chair in 2011.

As a member of the YPO Gold Rocky Mountain Chapter, Mike participates in local events throughout the year. He is actively involved in supporting the American Cancer Society, World Vision, United Way and the Boys and Girls Club.

Mike and his wife Barb enjoy traveling and spending time with their family and are also avid sports fans.
