Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) Charles McC. Mathias Laboratory

About the Project

The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC) Charles McC. Mathias Laboratory Expansion required the construction of a new 72,000-SF laboratory, along with the renovation of 22,000 SF of existing space and the demolition of several on-site buildings. The new and renovated laboratories are connected via a two-story atrium, which serves as a collaboration center for the many different SERC research teams conducting studies related to global change, terrestrial/marine ecology, invasive species, and nutrient pollution. The combined laboratories support over 180 researchers, technicians, and students.
