After High School As a high school graduate and new employee of Hensel
Phelps Construction Co., you will begin a rewarding career by learning
the basics of construction. You will have the opportunity for extensive
training and advancement as your base of knowledge and experience expands.
The following positions are promotion objectives for the high school graduate.
However, the intelligent, skilled, hardworking, and loyal employee has
no limitations for advancement at Hensel Phelps Construction Co.! Apprentice - A Great Beginning... Apprentice is an entry position. This position can be held in a number of trades that Hensel Phelps self performs, including (but not limited to) apprenticeship roles as a carpenter, mason, concrete finisher or equipment operator. As an apprentice, you will be able to “earn while you learn” by working full time. Hensel Phelps will pay all costs associated with sending you through an apprenticeship training program at certified institutions recognized by the construction industry. Apprentice programs normally extend two to four years depending on your selected trade. [top] Journeyman - Highly Skilled ... A Journeyman is a fully qualified and trained craftsperson in a particular trade. This position can be held in one of a number of trades that Hensel Phelps self performs including carpentry, masonry, concrete finishing, or equipment operator. [top] Foreman - Front Line Supervisor... Foreman is a first-line supervisory position. A Foreman has extensive knowledge of the trade and the work involved, along with an ability to resolve problems with appropriate and timely decisions. A Foreman reports directly to a General Foreman or Superintendent. Among a Foreman’s responsibilities are pre-planning work for a crew, providing training opportunities for craftspersons, and overseeing safety procedures, quality of workmanship, production costs, and the morale and attitude of a crew. [top] General Foreman - A Leader ... A General Foreman is typically assigned to larger projects, oversees larger crews, and reports directly to the Superintendent. A General Foreman has a number of foremen reporting to him or her. The position entails the same responsibilities as any foreman regarding safety, quality, production and morale, including providing training opportunities for craftspersons, and overseeing safety procedures, quality of workmanship, production costs, and the morale and attitude of a crew. [top] Area Superintendent - Capable & Responsible... This position serves primarily on larger projects assisting the Project Superintendent. As such, you will support development of the project schedule and pre-job planning. You will accept responsibility for a specific area of the project or phase of work. Responsibilities entail such items as safety compliance, craft supervision and production, subcontractor coordination, scheduling, material handling, daily reports, quality control and craft training. [top] Project Superintendent - Excellent Potential... The Project Superintendent is the company's representative with the responsibility and authority for daily coordination and direction of the project so that it is safe, within budget, on schedule, meets the company's quality standards, and meets the customer's satisfaction. To accomplish this, you must conceptualize a plan to construct the project and ensure that the daily and weekly activities are consistent with this plan. The Project Superintendent and the Project Manager will work together as a complementary team. Their combined effort is greater than the sum of their individual efforts. The Project Superintendent can concentrate most of his or her time on the daily and short-range direction of the project. [top] |
